Update: Apple has revealed the Apple Watch 2 alongside the iPhone 7. Here’s what you need to know including all the latest news, specs, new features and release date.
The first-gen Apple Watch didn't set the world ablaze. But Apple’s track record with first generation devices hasn’t actually always been perfect. Which is why most experts, ourselves included thought the Apple Watch 2 would be a more significant release.
Based on what we've seen of the new smartwatch so far this evening, that could well be the case.
“Apple Watch has changed what people expect from a watch,” said CEO Tim Cook launching the new device, claiming Apple is now the second best-selling watch brand in the world after Rolex.
Here's seven essential things about the Apple Watch Series 2 you need to know about right now.
1. WATCHOS 3 IS HERE AND IT COMES WITH POKÉMON GO
Apple previewed watchOS 3 back at WWDC 2016 and the Apple Watch 2 is the first device set to come running it out of the box.
Some of the new features we knew were coming – instant app launching, a new dock, faster switching between watch faces, enhanced messaging features, activity sharing, the Breathe mindfulness app, and so on – but we were also treated to a surprise.
The Apple Watch Series 2 is Pokémon Go ready and will integrate Pokétraining into the watch's existing activity tracking feature set.

2. IT'S MORE DURABLE...
Where the original Apple Watch was splash-proof, the Apple Watch 2 offers enhanced water-resistance and can be submerged up to 50 metres, making it suitable for a range of water-related activities including swimming, surfing, and walking around the UK in the summer.
There's some serious design wizardry going on here by the looks of things, with Apple saying that the Watch 2's speakers have been engineered to expel water from the wearable once it's taken out of realms aquatic.
We'll have to see how this works in the real world but it sounds neat.
3. ... AND MORE POWERFUL
The new SiP chip powering the Apple Watch 2 features a dual-core processor that's up to 50% faster than the original engine, according to Apple, as well as packing a fresh GPU.
Apple demonstrated the Watch 2's prowess by showing off astronomy app Dark Sky functioning at 60fps on the wearable, which doesn't sound too shabby.

4. THE DISPLAY LOOKS SWEET
The Apple Watch Series 2 sports a new display that Apple claims is twice as bright as the previous model at 1,000 nits.

5. YEP, BUILT-IN GPS IS HERE
As widely expected, Apple has added GPS to the Apple Watch Series 2. We don't know how it's going to perform in the flesh, but we do know that ViewRanger will be among the first apps to appear on the latest wearable.

6. THERE'S MORE STYLES
As well as the familiar aluminium and stainless steel finishes, the Apple Watch 2 will also come available in a new material that Apple says it's been working on for "quite some time."
That would be the new white ceramic flavour, which Apple claims four times harder than stainless steel.
There's also some additional luxury Hermes models coming to market, including a new double-buckle strap, plus a special edition Nike+ edition which features a perforated "breathable" strap that could be a hit with athletes.

7. THE ORIGINAL APPLE WATCH IS GETTING AN UPGRADE
Rounding out the Apple Watch 2 launch, Apple said that it would be re-releasing its first Apple Watch with the new S2 chipset.
It'll be priced at $269 and hit the market on September 9.
